Telenor Pakistan will Match Contribution 4 Times of Employee's Contribution

CEO Telenor Pakistan sent out Email to employees. I am pasting it as It is...

From: Jon Eddy Abdullah
To: All Telenor Pakistan

Sent: Thu Aug 05 10:40:56 2010

Subject: We can make a Difference!

Dear Colleague,

We are all painfully conscious of the heart wrenching devastation caused by the recent floods throughout the country which have already claimed 1,500 lives and displaced more than 2.5m people. Conservative estimates indicate that the magnitude of destruction will be 3 to 4 times that of the 2005 earthquake.

I know you are anxious and desperate to start contributing straight away, but we must proceed in an organized and systematic manner. Over the last few days we have been busy putting together a comprehensive plan that will allow us to channelize our collective resources towards the rescue and rehabilitation work.

In this regard I wanted to share some very important updates with you;

Firstly, Telenor Pakistan has made an initial commitment of Rs.100m (US$ 1.2m approx) in cash and contributions towards flood relief. We hope our example will spur other MNC’s into action as well.

Secondly, we have selected Pakistan Red Crescent Society as a partner. PRCS has presence in all affected areas and impeccable reputation in saving and rebuilding lives. They will also guide us on how our employees can work along with PRCS’s volunteers or what goods and supplies should be donated.

Thirdly, we have set up a mechanism for employees to make a donation from their monthly salaries. I have decided to donate 2 day’s salary to this cause and hope you follow suit. Telenor Pakistan will match your contribution 4 times over (i.e. for every Rs. 1000 of employee contribution, TP will add Rs. 4000, making our collective contribution Rs. 5000). So please donate generously.

Lastly, we need you to become champions of this cause. Pass this message around to your friends and family, create awareness, get others to join Telenor’s efforts in raising funds and collecting much needed supplies. Information and details about the program will be on the portal shortly. Stay tuned.

“In the future I see Pakistan as a nation that will bounce back higher and stronger – no matter how daunting the fall”

Karo Mumkin !

Modesty Comparison - Germany Vs Pakistan

German Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg leaves on his bicycle after he attended a book presentation.

He was also spotted riding bicycle when he came for Economic Council Meeting. What a modesty. But when ministers in Pakistan travel on roads, we also see the modesty. Roads get empty somehow.  Have a look (Courtesy: Karachi MetBlogs)

Too much Loyalty will ruin everything in Pakistan

With time, everything changes and so is the loyalty. In Pakistan, you have to be loyal with the present and not with the past. Else, you will be like this ANP worker...

Pakistan Electricity Production Capacity - Real Facts

Electricity produced in Pakistan is from three main sources.

1). Hydal
2). Thermal (Gas/Steam/Furnace Oil)
3). Nuclear

There are four major power producers in country which include Water & Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Below is the break-up of the installed capacity of each of these power producers (as of June-2008).

1). WAPDA

a). WAPDA Hydal

Hydal Electricity generated by WAPDA varies between two extremities i.e. between minimum of 2414 MW and maximum of 6761 MW depending upon the river flow through the whole year.

Total Power Generation Capacity of Pakistan (including all sources) is 19855 MW (cross checked from WIKIPEDIA)and the electricity demand (as of today 20-04-2010) is 14500 MW and PEPCO is merely generating 10000 MW.

So it is obvious that these 15-20 hrs power shutdowns in most parts of the country are not because of the lack of generation capacity but only because of IMF / World Bank policies imposed on our nation by Govt. The Power Generation companies are not buying Furnace Oil from PSO by saying they don’t have money to do that but we are all paying for Electricity that is generated from Furnace Oil. This is the reason that top refineries like PRL are operating at 40% capacities. IMF / World bank has imposed to reduce budget deficit by importing less crude oil. But due to this fact all our industries are under severe crisis. None of our political party who are in Assembly is ready to speak on it because every one is blessed by US / IMF / World Bank.

Dear Pakistani’s,

This is a time to show your social activism your power and strength. It is your silence which is deafening and your couldn’t care less attitude which makes the people in power more powerful evasive and secure in their Air conditioned offices.

PLEASE STAND UP AND BE COUNTED:
  WE WANT ELECTRICITY IN PAKISTAN.

Electricity now is @11 Rs. per unit, and it will increase after every two months as directed by  IMF policies. Also CHINA offers to Pakistan Electricity for just Rs.300 Monthly Bill and Unlimited Usage of Electricity but our government is not taking the offer seriously. This is because there will be neither kick backs nor any commissions to be pocketed by the strong mafia of politicians and bureaucrats.

These people are there because of your votes. Let them serve you rather than rule you……
NOW THIS IS OUR TIME TO SHOW THE GOVERNMENT YOUR STRENGTH.

PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, BECAUSE OF THIS MESSAGE MANY PEOPLE WOULD COME TO KNOW ABOUT THE TRUTH.

Who is adding fuel to the Ban-fire?

After the facebook ban in Pakistan, there are news and gossips circulating that Wikipedia and Youtube (Update: Reuters saying that Youtube banned apparently in Pakistan) are also going to be down for usage. I was just wondering how come?
And then I read this piece in daily 'The News'. Here is what the reporter "Moayyed Jafri" is saying

Other social networking websites such as Twitter, Orkut, Bebo, Zoosk and Hi5 hosting the blasphemous activity of holding the cartoon completion, have been left totally unchecked which totally fails the purpose of implementing the ban. In addition to the social networking sites, dozens of web-blogs intending to host the blasphemous activity on May 19 and 20 are accessible as well.
and then the reporter didn't stop there...

To a question regarding other websites and web-blogs, he said that the PTA was banning all websites involved in the blasphemous activity and a special screening unit had been formed to identify and ban all the sites.
Reporters like these needs to be told that dude, get a life!!! This guy thinks that banning all such websites will do good for Muslim Ummah. No, Sweet Heart, No!!!

Just wondering that why this guy didn't mentioned XVideos website whereas this website is the leading Porn site accessible from Pakistan [Ref: Alexa - http://www.alexa.com/topsites/countries;1/PK]

Back to back Blasts - Security Analysis

Being a common man, I have this grudge towards security agencies always that they don't protect people like me. They are there for the looters and plunders. We are witnessing back to back bombings in towns and cities. They are taking alternate days for Twin cities and Peshawar Metropolis.

Security Lapses are making these people do their job successfully. At the time of my writing this post, 20 people are already reported dead in Pindi Mosque Blast. Now, who give a fuck here!!! Security agencies just take control of the whole area, make some firing here and there and then disappear leaving the place for the rotten lot. After sometime we will see PM and President saying CONDEMN WORDS. Just a ticker, thats it!! Rehman Malik will then show up and say,"Hi babes, I will fuck these guys up" but why don't we see anything concrete.

Speaking of security in twin cities, its pathetic. You will see nomads like policemen standing at picket points erected in every sector of islamabad but they don't give a fuck who goes and who don't. They simply gaze, stare, torch and give way to the people. They don't feel like being ready for any kind of mishap. My family friends give Rs.30 to policeman not to check the luggage at the back of the coach as they were going to airport. Now, Rs.30 is in huge supply, i guess!! You will only see cars zig-zagging in islamabad picket points and nothing else. There will be huge gathering of cars at these picket points and people in cars at those places simply fear of the gathering but who give a fuck!!

The looters and plunders have erected huge concrete walls outside their homes , office and party places. They have even blocked the roads. But why do they fear? They are not going to die. We are here for your sires and madams. We will lay our heads down , butchered and minced. You don't worry mother fuckers!!!

Speaking of Peshawar, we simply don't understand that where are security guyz? You won't find police men in town or on Khyber Bazar road other than picket points. Cm'on you dumb assess. Peshawar has millions of roads inside. Rs.100 is the rate if you are found without CNIC. There is so much populous area in Peshawar surroundings. People do all kinds of bad things in city and then go to the area like Mattani. Kidnappers live there, roam there. But who give a fuck!!  People going towards Kohat have been badly hurt. Policemen block the road early evening and it remain like this till morning. If you are a lady and you don't own a place in Peshawar, then my dear, you are going to be a looser tonight. Pathans have lost their guest welcoming nature. They don't give a fuck now!!!

For God Sake, Just be a Pakistani. I just want you to be a true Pakistani. Just don't be a fucken disgrace to us.

Bush: Pakistan, Not Iraq, Next President's Big Task

On Fox News Sunday, Bill Kristol recounts that in a 90-minute, mostly off-the-record meeting with a small group of journalists last week, President Bush "conveyed the following impression, that he thought the next president's biggest challenge would not be Iraq, which he thinks he'll leave in pretty good shape, and would not be Afghanistan, which is manageable by itself. ... It's Pakistan." We have "a sort of friendly government that sort of cooperates and sort of doesn't. It's really a complicated and difficult situation."

Time reports counterterrorism officials "say the best hope for nabbing No. 1 and No. 2," Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri, "may lie in the capture of second-tier al-Qaeda commanders who know where their bosses are hiding." A recent CIA report "speculates that bin Laden has long-term kidney disease and may have only months to live, two U.S. officials familiar with the report told TIME. (A CIA spokesman denied the report exists.)" The Pentagon has "requested that Bush sign an 'execute order' expanding its authority to go after these commanders in Pakistani territory." But some in the Administration are reluctant to cross that line for fear of destabilizing Pakistan's recently elected government." The New York Times, meanwhile, says in an editorial that the "alarming resurgence of Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan makes it even more imperative for the United States to begin planning for a swift and orderly withdrawal from Iraq."

Yet Again SECOND HAND stuff denied to Pakistan

The American government is said to have stopped Germany to contract a multi-million dollar deal for the sale of 800 Armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to the Pakistan army, after getting annoyed with the recent moves of the new political government in Islamabad to strike peace deals with the Taliban in the tribal areas.

Earlier, the American state department which actually hold the license for the manufacturing and sale of these APCs, being prepared in Germany as a part of defence agreement, had granted the permission to the Germany authorities to provide these APCs to Pakistan. But, now all of sudden, it has reviewed its decision. The sources said, the only consideration behind this move was none other than the recent peace deals in the tribal areas of Pakistan, as the Americans were found to be annoyed with the new political government at Islamabad.

This recent move was actually being seen as an attempt to put pressure on the new leadership of the Pakistan army so that the peace deals should not be contracted with Taliban elements in the tribal and other parts of the NWFP.

Earlier, this deal was put on the hold because of the European Union concerns after President General Æ Pervez Musharraf had staged a mini coup on November 3, 2007 after he sacked the judges and suspended the basic human rights. These drastic steps against the political forces and the judges had greatly provoked the European union to slap sanctions on the supply of the military equipments to Pakistan.

But, sources said, now after the return of the new political government in Islamabad, the German government again gave indication to contract the supply of the APCs, but this time, it is said the Americans have stopped the Germany to supply the APC.

When contacted by The News, Brig Æ Samson Simon confirmed that there were certain EU sanction because of action taken on November 3. “All the military trading of the equipments have been put on hold including the deal for the 800 APC”, said Brig Simon who is the director of Eastern Management Services, a business partner of the German supplier Fahrzeugwerk Gmbh (FWW)—-confirmed. He, however, refused to make any comment that now this time the Americans were behind the sudden move to block the supply of these 800 modified APCs for their use in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Earlier, sources said, the German army had abandoned using these APCs after upgrading their own war weapons after handing over those used weapons to the North bound official Armies and repair and overhaul workshops in the Northern of Germany. The Germany was ready to sell these second hand weapons to different countries after their upgradation including Pakistan. After initial negotiations, the Germans were ready to provide these modified weapons to the Pakistan army, so that it could fight in the tribal areas more effectively. Although, the Pakistan was also using its locally manufactured APCs in the tribal areas, but they were said to be not as effective as these German could be because of their standards and quality. These APCs were being sold at very cheap price, if compared to their actual prices of these items, so that Pakistan could effectively fight against the terrorists in the tribal areas of the country.

Earlier, in December 2007, the FWW had got obtained the export license from the Germany as well from the US state department was granted for Pakistan. But, all of sudden, the government of Pakistan was informed that because of the political situation in Pakistan arising out of the judicial crises, the firm was asked to postpone the release of APCs for the next two months. Before the suspension in the supply of these APCs, the Germans were offerings these weapons after repair and maintenance in the workshops of Germany. These APCs were to be modernize with engine, gearbox, braking and stearing system and suspension system and protection according to the requirements of the tribal areas.

But, sources said now the German firm has been told that it should not further negotiate the deal as the Americans who actually hold the licenses for the sale of the APCs were not ready for their immediate supply.

When contacted by The News, ISPR Major General Athar Abbas said, he did not have any idea about this proposed deal. He said, however, Pakistan was using the locally manufactured APCs in the tribal areas where the police and FC were given these machines to fight against the local fighters. He said he would check with the concerned officials and return the call to give the full version.

Pakistan Political Science - A Mathematical Perspective

Pakistan’s heptagonal (a polygon with seven sides) political game has seven major players: Pakistan Army, America, the PPP, the PML-N, the presidency, the media and civil society. Game theory, a branch of applied mathematics, also provides some serious applications in the field of political science. To begin with, game theory assumes that each of the seven players shall always act to maximize their individual gains by anticipating the responses to their actions by one or other players in the game. Game theory, having made that assumption, then proceeds to “mathematically capture behaviour” of players in the game.

The Pakistan Army, for instance, having dominated Pakistan’s politics — and thus economics — is in the game to preserve its domination. America’s foreign policy is strictly based on realism, devoid of any moral or ethical dimension. America’s interest in this country revolves around the ‘war on terror’ and nuclear non-proliferation. As a consequence, the Pakistan Army and Uncle Sam are natural allies.

On November 28, 2007, the presidency’s de facto powers were no more. In the immediate future, the PPP and the PML-N, in order to maximize their own gains, shall snatch away the bulk of presidency’s de jure powers.

The Bush-Musharraf nexus can deliver little — if anything at all — towards advancing America’s regional strategic objectives. The nexus, however, lives on to forestall Democrats from highlighting Republican-made Pak-Afghan policy failures.

The PPP leadership is in the game to maximize its own gains. In that sense, restoration of the judges on PML-N’s terms will be a step in the wrong direction. At this juncture, I will introduce the game theory’s ‘perfect and imperfect information’ paradigm. I submit that PPP’s top leadership is taking actions based on imperfect information. To begin with, the PPP is failing to recognize the development of two other power centres in the post-March 9 Pakistan — the media and the lawyers-led civil society. I further submit that the PPP is taking actions and responding without anticipating — and modelling in — the responses of the media and civil society.

Yes, the PPP is expected to do nothing less than to maximize its own gains but there is even evidence that the PPP is playing the game based on imperfect information. The bulk of this ‘imperfect information’ seems to be originating from PPP’s un-elected decision-makers who are not fully cognizant of ground reality. Yes, the PPP is the only party that has won seats in all the four provinces but persistent decision-making based on imperfect information does not bode well for PPP’s future electoral prospects.

Pakistan’s game theory may soon have another player. On May 13, Jaipur, India’s ‘Pink City’, had blood on its streets — red blood. On May 14, “Indian military commanders lodged a new protest… with their Pakistani counterparts after soldiers came under fire from across the border for the second time in a week.” At a time when Washington feels it is losing leverage over Pakistan, America may — as it has in the past — signal India to pressurize Pakistan (in order to maximize America’s own gains).

Mian Nawaz Sharif, whether he knows it or not, is playing the game theory along the lines of what in political science is known as the ‘median voter theorem’. The theorem states that if a politician wants to maximize his or her votes then he or she should “commit to the policy position preferred by the median voter”. Rules of the game theory now dictate that isolating Nawaz would serve the interests of both the Pakistan Army and America.

Asif Ali Zardari, on the other hand, does not want to confront the presidency but is in direct confrontation with the ‘median voter theorem’. True, the PPP is not in need of votes in the foreseeable future but history stands witness that a political player adamant on confronting the ‘median voter theorem’ stands to hurt his electoral prospects.

Mian Nawaz Sharif, whether he knows it or not, is playing the game by the rules prescribed by the ‘Economic Theory of Democracy’. The theory recommends to all politicians to draw out a graph of ideological positions of voters and then to identify the median voter.

The PML-N seems to have drawn out just such a graph — at least mentally — and also identified the median voter.Asif Ali Zardari, on the other hand, is playing the same game based on strategies embedded in pure power politics, pragmatism, individual charm and realpolitik. Somehow, these strategies do not take into account the development of alternative — and intelligent — power centres, the media and civil society. And, that takes us back to game theory’s ‘imperfect information’ paradigm.

Well, there’s mathematics, applied mathematics and game theory. There also is calculus and vector calculus. Then there’s geometry, trigonometry and differential geometry. There was a time when none of this was applicable to Pakistani politics. And, then the president suspended the chief justice. Don’t throw game theory out the window. Remember, eight game theorists have won Nobel prizes.

US will pursue Osama if he is in Pakistan - NegroPonte

United States Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte has said that if Washington has explicit proof of Osama Bin Laden's presence in Pakistan's border regions, it will categorically pursue him. Negroponte said that as far as Osama bin Laden was concerned, Washington would pursue him regardless of any permission from Pakistan to conduct a military operation within its borders.

"I'm pretty confident that that's the way the president would react," the Daily Times quoted Negroponte, as saying. Describing Pakistan as a very important country to the United States because of its proximity to Afghanistan and because of the warm ties enjoyed between the two countries since the post-9/11 period, Negroponte said Washington had full faith President Pervez Musharraf, but is equally aware of the prime minister's role (Gilani) acquiring greater importance.

Musharraf is our best bet By G. PARTHASARATHY

Reading recent Hamid Mir column made me search out for this fella article. Here is what G. PARTHASARATHY wrote in his column..

The February 2008 elections in Pakistan, in which Gen Pervez Musharraf’s loyalists were routed across the country, sent the diplomatic establishments in the White House in Washington and South Block in New Delhi into a tailspin. Despite warnings about Gen Musharraf’s growing unpopularity, the diplomatic establishments in New Delhi and Washington remained wedded to the “Musharraf is our best bet” syndrome and wrongly believed, till the very last moment, that Gen Musharraf was invincible and irreplaceable in Pakistan.

Major General Jay W. Hood - A monster in nutshell

Major General Jay W. Hood has been posted as the Chief ,Office of the Defence Representative, Pakistan.

I got this message a week ago. I read the message..pressed some keys.. and bang!! its deleted from my inbox. I thought its yet another case of spam messages series. But in recent past, i have came across various articles where they have pointed out this information. I googled for the scandals..and yeah!! they were right... so i thought.. Its my moral right baby!!.. Give it a go!!!.. Here is what this monster is all about..

According to the US Department of Defence News Release of March 13, 2008, Major General Jay W. Hood has been posted as the Chief, Office of the Defence Representative, Pakistan.

General Hood is a former commanding general of Guantanamo Bay prison and according to US National Public Radio (NPR), General Hood's tenure at Guantanamo was marred by a series of scandals and growing controversies relating to policies on detention and interrogation. While controversy has always surrounded Guantanamo, it reached new heights when Hood was there - especially in the aftermath of the scandal breaking out publicly on detentions in Iraq at Abu Ghraib. Interestingly, it was General Miller, Hood's predecessor at Guantanamo, who was implicated in Iraq.

Hood came under intense criticism when he decided to force feed prisoners with the use of a restraining chair. The gruesome means of force feeding have compelled the US to censor a drawing by a Guantanamo Bay detainee where he depicted himself as a skeleton with his head double-strapped down, a tube in his nose, a black mask over his mouth, no eyes visible only giant cheekbones. The detainee, Sami Al Haj is a Sudanese cameraman who worked for Al Jazeera television and the self-sketch was to mark his 431st day on hunger strike at Guantanamo Bay.

It was also during Hood's service at Guantanamo Bay that the Pentagon released details of five confirmed cases of US personnel abusing the holy Quran. In a story published in the Washington Post on 4 June 2005, the US military admitted that soldiers and interrogators had kicked the holy Quran, got copies wet and stood on the holy Book during an interrogation and also sprayed urine on another copy. This was well established by the Pentagon after General Hood, as Commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo completed an inquiry into these cases of abuse of the holy Quran. Yet Hood chose to describe these incidents as "largely inadvertent".

The inquiry tried to cover up deliberate abuses of the holy Book that detainees had been reporting to their lawyers, including lawyer Tom Wilner who was representing 11 Kuwaiti detainees. He declared that the number and persistence of reports of the Quran abuse from detainees revealed a much broader problem than indicated by the Hood inquiry. Clearly Hood's main intent was to cover up as much as could be done in the wake of increasing revelations on the issue of Quran abuse.

It is unfortunate that the US Army Chief of Staff has chosen to appoint such a controversial officer to Pakistan, especially given his record and linkage to abuse of prisoners and the Holy Quran at Guantanamo. Guantanamo Bay itself has become a symbol of injustice, torture and abuse of Islam and sending a commanding officer from there to Islamabad begs the question: What is the message coming out of the Pentagon for Pakistanis by this insensitive act?

Equally important, given that host governments always have a choice of refusing a nominee - and many Western countries have exercised that right in the diplomatic nominees of the Pakistan Government - why has the Pakistan government chosen to silently accept what the US military dishes out, with no thought to the sensitivities of its own people?

When asked, a US Embassy spokesperson said:

"Major General Hood was nominated by the US Army and approved through the highest levels of the Department of Defense. His assignment to Pakistan is not related to his previous assignment but rather is a reflection of his standing as a senior military officer.

He was chosen for the assignment to Pakistan because he is a highly qualified officer at the Major General level. Assigning an officer at this level to this position reflects the continued US goal of cooperation with the Armed Forces of Pakistan. He is the second consecutive Major General assigned as Chief of the Office of the Defense Representative Pakistan."
