Two Nations, Two Choices

Just came across an article by Vir Sanghvi. The writer placed a clear line between India and Pakistan. What actually is the difference between the two nations? is this religion only?

Writer Goes on at one point like this....

There were only two major Asian countries that rejected the US prescription
for development and foreign policy: India and China. And look where they are
today.
