Sugar Export

Weeks back , i have mentioned about the sugar crisis we may see in future. Now, here is more to the story.
Like Wheat , now exporters are going to export sugar as the domestic needs can be met easily. They stated that its just for some gains. Even Mr. President mentioned other day in press conference that what is wrong in getting some quick bucks? (Sorry sir!!! but at the expense of local inflation..NO WAY).

Judicial Slingshot

Judicial slingshot was re-invented from Mr. President on his visit to Europe. He has referred again and again to the judicial activism , nepotism and corruption behind his November 3 action. He has smashed the hanging judge with his slingshot. His remarks can be found here [ENGLISH JOURNALISTS CONFERENCE] and here [RUSI].

Now, after getting smashed and trapped in nest , Iftikhar Chaudary somehow managed to come out with his version. Here is what he started with...

I am the Chief Justice of Pakistan presently detained in my residence since
November 3,2007 pursuant to some verbal, and unspecified, order passed
by General Musharraf.I have found it necessary to write to you, and
others, because during his recent visits toBrussels, Paris, Davos
and London General Musharraf has slandered me, and my
colleagues, with impunity in press conferences and other addresses and meetings.
In addition he has widely distributed, among those whom he has met, a slanderous
document (hereinafter the Document) entitled: “PROFILE OF THE FORMER CHIEF JUSTICE OF PAKISTAN”.

Meanwhile, Rashid Qureshi, Musharraf's spokesman, dismissed Chaudhry's claim he was under house detention, saying he was in fact illegally occupying an official residence that he had been asked to vacate.
Qureshi also rejected Chaudhry's description of the president as an "extremist general." "The world recognises him as a moderate and a balanced personality. He has been working for the last eight years to make Pakistan's conservative society into a moderate one," he said.

King Came To Rescue Sapoy

And when everyone is criticizing SHORTCUT AZIZ of bringing havoc to the country economy, king (read SUPREME LEADER OF MILITARY PAKISTAN) came to rescue.

Reportedly, patient named Shaukat got ill after remarks by his friends (read foes) that the whole country is facing economic instability due to shaukat. The patient called on 911 (or 1122) for emergency rescue as he is trapped in the hole (read man-hole). Emergency staff immediately responded back as the patient used to be the huge investor of the pocket of Emergency LEADER. They got hold of him in hotel in LONDON. and gave some tranquilizers and injections of pure blood (read blood of Pakistanis poor). And then rescued him from the mess with slapping on the faces of insects (read FREE MEDIA).

Petroleum Scandal - A crisis

Dr. Farukh Saleem article on this sunday was an eye opener. He is always good in stats and figures .. this times he showed up some thing wonderful... Read it

Capital suggestion
Sunday, January 27, 2008

By Dr Farrukh SaleemIn May 2006, the international price of oil hovered around $66 per barrel (OPEC Basket). On January 2, oil in New York was traded at $100 per barrel (NYMEX) while OPEC Basket was quoted at around $90 per barrel (remember, in January 1999, oil had hit a low of $11 per barrel).Yes, in May 2006 the price of diesel in Pakistan was Rs37.18 per litre.

Yes, Shell Pakistan is still selling diesel at Rs37.73 per litre. In effect, the price of oil in the international market has gone up by a whopping 40 per cent but the government of Pakistan is providing diesel to Pakistanis at rates lower than the international market (India hasn't increased the price of petrol and diesel in 18 months).

We all know that our government has absolutely no control over the international price of oil. What we must also recognize is that Pakistan's oil industry is a cartel and the best thing that a cartel does is rip off consumers. Our oil cartel essentially has nine major members and 169 million consumers to be ripped off. Our oil industry is oligopolistic in nature; from Greek 'few seller', many buyers and an inelastic demand (quantity of oil demanded by consumers changes little with a price increase).

Here are the nine major members of the oil cartel: Pakistan State Oil (PSO), Pak-Arab Refinery (PARCO), Attock Refinery Limited (ARL), Attock Petroleum, National Refinery Limited (NRL), Pakistan Refinery (PRL), Chevron/Caltex, Shell Pakistan and Total-PARCO. They own each other, they sit on each others' boards and they own projects jointly. ARL, Attock Petreleum and NRL are all owned by the Attock Group. PSO, Shell and Caltex own PRL jointly. The government of Pakistan owns 60 per cent of PARCO while Total and PARCO are partners.

Here's how 169 million consumers are being ripped off:

One, no refinery in Pakistan is technically capable of producing 0.5 per cent sulphur diesel (emission control standards in Europe and North America now require refineries to produce ultra low sulphur diesel). All that our refineries produce is 1 per cent sulphur diesel. In essence, Pakistani consumers are being supplied an inferior quality product at the price of a superior product. The average differential in price--between 0.5 per cent sulphur diesel and 1 per cent sulphur diesel--is $18 per ton. Pakistani consumers are being ripped off a hefty Rs4 billion a year.

Two, in November 1999, the freight component on a litre of diesel fuel stood at Rs0.65. In December 2004, 'Inland Freight' on HOBC amounted to a scandalous Rs12.24 a litre. Someone is making truckloads of money because transporting a litre of gasoline should not be costing more than Rs0.30.

Three, in July 2002, the government of Pakistan allowed refineries to impose a 5 to 10 per cent 'deemed duty' in order to create a special reserve for the purpose of upgrading. The refineries have sucked up Rs18 billion from Pakistani consumers but not a rupee has been spent on up-gradation.

Four, since 2001, the government of Pakistan has been collecting an average of Rs40 billion to Rs50 billion a year in the form of 'Petroleum Development Levy' to be used for the stabilization of prices in future years. That reserve should have crossed Rs200 billion (the levy was ended in 2005). Can anyone please tell me where that reserve is?

Five, refining margins charged by Pakistani refineries are, in some cases, twice as high as being charged by refineries outside Pakistan. The cartel has served its members well. Look at who is making millions if not billions: PARCO made Rs1.2 billion in 2000-01 and now makes in excess of Rs10 billion. NRL has gone from a meagre Rs23 million in 2000-01 to Rs4 billion. ARL has gone from making Rs29 million in 2000-01 to Rs1.7 billion.Yes, Pakistan's oil cartel is now demanding from the government a colossal Rs49 billion as 'Price Differential Claim'.

Yes, Pakistani consumers would have to pay more because the international price has gone up. But, governments around the world support consumers, not cartels. We are special. Governments around the world break cartels. We are special.

Economic Policies of Shaukat Aziz Govt Shattered..

Kaiser Bengali is currently working for Collective for Social Science Research, a research company based in Karachi, economist Bengali has also served as the managing director Social Policy Development Centre between 2001-2004.
His latest interview is eye opener for the govt and us [BLOODY CIVILIANS]. His comment on the Shaukat Aziz Govt. is something like this

For eight years Shaukat Aziz has mismanaged the economy like no other finance
minister. Because Shaukat Aziz knew he does not has to go back and ask people
for votes, he couldn’t care less about what he did to the economy. All he had to
show for was the stock market performance which is only hot air.

Justice in Pakistan

Back after a while..was not having much of the power to write about the sorry state of pakistan. Simply, its a shame like feeling every now and then. Living in this piece of land is becoming a sad story now...

I will start with the situation of justic in pakistan. Write Javaid Chaudary has written a wonderful article on it. He quoted a politician IFTIKHAR HUSSAIN GILANI of kohat who managed to transfer the police office when he intercepted HIS VAN and asked him to show his documents. Project : Rule of Law

RULE OF LAW project in LUMS has come up with a report which Urges U.S. Lawmakers To Demand Restoration Of Judiciary.

Report entitled Defending Dictatorship:U.S. Foreign Policy and Pakistan's Struggle for Democracy. The report is co-authored by members of a delegation from the United States National Lawyers Guild and is the result of a ten-day fact-finding visit to Pakistan to assess the status of the judiciary and the prospect for fair elections in light of recent attacks on judicial independence. The report criticizes U.S. foreign policy in Pakistan, concluding that U.S. support for President Musharaff and its failure to demand restoration of the deposed judges will have long-term negative impacts on the judiciary and the rule of law in Pakistan and damage regional safety and security.

Wheat Diaries - Part I

An article at PkPolitics mentioned about a letter written by a person to NAB(National Alliance for Businessmen). He goes on like this..

Being a common citizen of Pakistan, I want to draw your attention towards the
corruption of President Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid), Punjab, and former chief
minister Ch Pervaiz Elahi, former advisor to prime minister on finance Dr Salman
Shah, former food and agriculture minister Sikandar Bosan and the absconding
former prime minister Shaukat Aziz who under a well-coordinated criminal plan to
make billions overnight not only sold 1.5 million ton wheat from official
godowns but also sold and smuggled the same quantity of wheat during the period
between December 27, 2006 and May 3, 2007.

Sugar Crisi - Yet 2 Come

There are times when i dont find something interesting worth mentioning here. So, then i go out and search out for future upcomings.
This time its SUGAR!!

Now after this wheat crisis (I do hope that you do know that who did that) something else should take the people by storm. As when people get idol, they started pinpointing the errors in the system and OUR ESTEEMED GOVT can't work properly then (Judges out due to terrorists BUG!!)

Now sugar growers (or i may say KASHTKAAR) are forecasting yet another blow. They have been told by mill owners that they will take sugarcane from them on criteria that they will take 20 MUNN extra for 200 MUNN. Now thats thunder strike on growers. Check this one out now..

Last year sugar cane growers were provided with advance form (as Govts claim) of sugarcane seed. SARKAR (Govt) claimed that this will bring much more crop then the seasonal one. People were lured and provided with new seeds. Crops did showed up more in numbers...but they dont have anything worth producing SUGAR!!! means that more sugarcane is needed to produce equal amount of sugar to the previous year. After carefully and cleverly seen by mill owners and crushers, they are charging 20 MUNN extra so that sugar can be produce of equal amounts.

Now i dont blame sugar mill owners for that. They will be asked by Govt to provide sugar to markets and they will do so. But Y did Govt provided less serup sugar cane seeds?.

Here is yet another twist in the story. Kashtkar are not ready to give 20 MUNN extra and sugar mill owners are not ready to take less. Crop crushing season is already on heads. and the problem still persists?? Who will look into it on time? Would they be waiting for yet another crisis? RAASHAANNN CARD??? ANYONE???

Here is more to the offing... Govt has asked on the growers to seed SUGAR BEET (Sugar Beet Report). Now, there is continuous denial from the growers but lets see what time will tell.

And SUGARCANE CROP crushing is low due to LOAD SHEDDING!!!

Gordon Brown - An ally or a foe!!!

Gorden Brown, the British premier, is on his visit in Asian regions. He is recently on visit to India. He has visited China before. Now, here comes the basic issue? WHY IS HE NOT VISITING IN PAKISTAN?
Musharraf on the other hand is on visit to Europe and will go to Britain in the last. If Mushy can meet the counterpart, why Mr.Browny is lagging behind? If Mushy terms Westerners as their allies in War on Terror than WHY an ally is not visiting its friend?
There are many other questions that are keep coming to my mind but you know they will block me if i gets too harsh on them (May be they wont be able to block me, but they will block the whole domain :-) ).

Now, this Brown held a press conference in India with Manmohan Singh where he mentioned that he has discussed FAIR AND FREE ELECTIONS in PAKISTAN. My GOD!!! is he our president? is Manmohan our PM? Shame on us!!! for letting these people to talk every now and then about our country. Why not he comes over here and feel the agony and pain that they have bestowed upon us. I WISH OUR POLITICAL LEADERS SHOW SOME BRAVERY AND STAND FOR COUNTRY ONCE AND FOR ALL!!! This way we can be a proud nation in future~~

Here is yet another conference that he held with industrialists where he mentioned that "failed states and failing states” can harbour terrorism. “Failed states can harbour terrorism and be a source of disorder and then spread right across the international community.” Now whom is he referring to? Was he refering to Pakistan(FAILED STATES INDEX done by FOREIGN POLICY MEGAZINE back in 2006 i guess)?

I salute Mushy for somethings that he is bold and he can outspeak other party with his quick replies. and he knows ENGLISH!! Right Words at right time!!! He is out there to counter the negative propaganda that west is showing these days towards us. There was this TALKBACK program on DAWN (2oth January, SUNDAY) where the guest was none other that KHURSHID KASURI. When the anchor asked him that isn't foreign commission are out there to make the image of country clear? KASURI replied "NO". I was shocked!!! They can't portray our right image!! Then what are they for? only to issue passports and visas (and they do it very well, i guess you know... the passports in france incident).

If the right people cannot portray the right image, then i would surely vote for negative people to make it negative for ALL!!

Wheat Crisis [Facts n Figures]

I remember once posting something about wheat crisis in the eyes of javaid chaudary. Now this lady from Islamabad Metroblogging has come up with right figures and facts. She has written it superbly.

In September 2007, then-PM Shaukat Aziz announced that the government would
import 1 million tons of wheat, stating that this action was necessary to
"maintain a reasonable buffer stock for the future." (Whereas, of course, at the
time we didn't even have an unreasonable buffer stock for the present.)
Now,
if you've actually been reading this article and not just skimming through it as
I would, you know that global wheat prices at this time were sky-high. So the
export price for Pakistani wheat during the April-May export window was
approximately $225-232 per ton - and for December 2007 delivery, the import
price of wheat from Australia and Russia was $380-400 per ton, exclusive of
transportation.
Therefore, we imported wheat at prices 70% higher than the
prices we exported them at.

Brahmans in Karbala

Writer Intizar Husain in DAWN (January 20th,2008) wrote an article on Husaini Brahmans.

The history of Husaini Brahmans, as told by Nonica Dutt, begins with ten
Brahmans going to Karbala with the determination to die fighting for Imam
Husain. Among them were Rahib Dutt and his seven sons who fought bravely and
resolutely. With the blessings of Imam Husain they met their death in a
heroic way. Rahib Dutt was the lone survivor of the battle.

Write did mention that famous artist Sunil Dutt was also from this community. This can be aunthenticated at DAILY TIMES

Deal Or No-Deal

The Emergency Times in its latest post mentioned about the possible deal happening between Musharaf and PML-N. The Emergency Times is an independent effort by individuals who are protesting since EMERGENY last year.
Article mentions that Govt been pressing on PML-N to stop its stance on Judiciary. I am not getting it that on one side NAWAZ SHARIF is placing hard nuts here in local media and surroundings and on the other hand SHAHBAZ SHARIF is meeting govt secretly. Something is really cooking up. Rumors of national govt is also there which some are saying that it may exist for ONE FULL YEAR!!

Waste Friendly

Science has gone leaps and bounds.. far more than my imagine.. I came across every now and then with the new invention globally. But I just remember only one invention in recent past done by Pakistani. and it was related to Antena!!

Now, here is this T Raghavendra Rao, director, Sustainable Technologies and Environmental Projects (STEPS) who has filed for a global patent last year for his technique of converting waste — think plastic, sewage, slaughterhouse waste, hospital waste, petroleum byproducts — into liquid fuel and gas.

After reading this i was having one thing on my imagery and that was THE DEBRIS in FEDERAL CAPITAL - ISLAMABAD (some said once...its 15 minutes drive from Pakistan). If you happen to come to islamabad via Kashmir Highway, you will feel that you are at the top of this world. Just 5 minutes drive in Islamabad and you will come up with sweet fragnance of everyday waste. and if i m lying, well go and check for your self. CDA is throwing everyday waste on road, by road and follow up on road. and no one is feeling the rot!!

I wish someone of you might come up with something good for this LAND OF PURE!!

Two Nations, Two Choices

Student Life - Past in Bilawal Bhutto Zardari Life

Just came across one article of DailyMail where the writer has shed lite on the student life of CHAIRPERSON of PPP,Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. The writer goes on with letting us know that which kind of parties does he enjoy, with whom he met..
Keeping religious point aside, i think he was busy merry-making with his friends all the time cz he didn't knew that his life will be so miserable in the days to come. At one instance, he was Party-going, next he was standing at death bed of his mom. I pity on that child, but i think if he wants to be a proper leader, he has to change his image, his habits!!!

Sheesha!! Was it worth it??

Hundreds of youngsters are prime victims of a new tobacco product ‘sheesha’ as almost all hotels and restaurants are offering its smoking in twin cities despite ban on smoking at public places.
Unfortunately, most users of ‘sheesha’ are unaware of the fact that this modern smoking contains all intoxicants that tobacco has and is more injurious than cigarettes.
The prime victims of ‘sheesha’ culture are young people who use it for fun and consider it a status symbol.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), ‘sheesha’ contains all intoxicants that a cigarette contains and actually it multiplies the hazards of tobacco. According to a latest field survey carried out by The Network for Consumer Protection in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, the restaurants and bars not only offer this tobacco product as a recreational group activity and a fashion but also clearly defy the Prohibition of Smoking in Enclosed Places and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance 2002.
Using ‘sheesha’ for one hour is equal to consuming 100 cigarettes with the smoke produced by a ‘sheesha’ contains a high level of toxins, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals and other carcinogens.
A similar hazard is posed to other people who are not directly using ‘sheesha’ by means of passive smoking. It is indeed said that in spite of an ordinance in place, which enforces a complete ban on smoking in public places, many restaurants offer ‘sheesha’ to their customers.

Jammers!!! Were they really working??

Read in 2days' Rauf Klasra article in THE NEWS and thought i should share with ya the info...

But, Babar defending Rehman Malik, said when the jubilant crowd stopped the car
of Benazir Bhutto, Rehman was quite upset as he said this was not the right
approach and Ms Bhutto should simply go home as there could be some trouble.
Likewise, he said, we both were talking on the telephones and at one point
we both realised that if our telephones were operating inside the car, it meant
that the jammers were not working properly. That created a panic and Rehman
immediately picked up his cell phone and started contacting the IGP and the Home
Department to know why the jammers were not working properly when Ms Bhutto was
travelling towards Islamabad.

Something fishy!!! i smell... Do ya???
